About Ironworkers Local 495

Local 495 was chartered in April of 1936 as a mixed local. Within the industry of Ironwork we currently represent approximately 385 members throughout the State of New Mexico. Our goals are to provide a skilled and safe workforce, to successfully complete every job, and to promote a family of union members.

More than anything our members are the backbone of Local 495 and we believe in fighting for prosperous opportunities, union representation, and health and welfare.

Our trade entails a lifelong career of travel, experience and satisfaction. Our jobs include bridges, schools, shopping centers, high-rise buildings, parking structures, power plants and so much more. This is a tremendous line of work where men and women are able to excel while receiving the benefits they deserve.

Why Unions?

In 1935 the US government enacted the Natioanl Relations Act that said, Employees shall have the right to form and labor organizations and to bargain collectively. It goes on to say that employers may not interfere with the exercise of this right.

In 1948, the US joined four-fifths of United Nations member states to ratify the Universal Declaration of Human Rights which included the right of all people to come together in unions.

Workers form unions because there is power in numbers. As Americans we believe in exercising our right to getting the most out of our work. When we come together our voices are louder, our expectations are higher and our concerns are greater.

Where unions are strong employers must bargain collectively to set the terms and conditions of employment. The demand for profits must then be compromised with fairness toward all workers.
