The Training
An Ironworker must be alert at all times in order to perform the duties of connecting, welding and installing decking. This line of work also includes climbing, lifting, sitting, standing, bending and pulling of the steel in the erection of buildings and the spanning of bridges. We make it a point to train our ironworkers so they are able to work safely side by side with other craftsmen.
Our program is a three year course consisting of 6,000 hours of on-the-job training and 660 hours of school time, which is in session for 38 weeks. While in training apprentices are dispersed into various classes of Ironwork such as: Orientation, History of the Trade, Structural Steel Erection, Reinforcing Rebar, Post Tensioning, Metal Buildings, Blue Print Reading, Ornamental Ironwork, Pre-Cast Concrete Erection, Welding and Burning, Surveying, and Foreman Training.
An apprentice advances every 1000 hours of on-the-job training in status as well as pay. There are 6 advancement levels. After an apprentice completes his 6th level, he will test out to become a Journeyman.
